Child Development: Ages Birth to Five Years

Description/Bio: This workshop will be a two-day presentation. The first day will be a review of the principles and domains of development and is intended to provide a basic introduction or review of Child Development, ages birth to five. The second day will expand on day one by providing opportunities for observation and discussion of development, review of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) and reasons for concerns in development. Case studies will be presented and discussed.

Connie Shugart is the project coordinator and early childhood resource specialist for STAR NET Regions I & III. She has had numerous years in early childhood teaching and/or training early childhood professionals and parents of young children. Connie has been the executive producer and host of numerous APPLES Video Magazine programs (a monthly in-service training program designed specifically around early childhood issues for professionals and families). Connie is a mentor for the Preschool for All programs and has presented at local and statewide conferences.

Joan Leff Joan is an early childhood resource specialist with numerous years of experience for STAR NET Regions I & III. Her past experiences have been in the early childhood profession, working with professionals as well as young children and their families in the Early Intervention, preschool and primary grade settings. Joan has presented at numerous local, state and national conferences and has been the Executive Producer of numerous Apples Video Magazine programs (a monthly in-service training program designed specifically around early childhood issues for professionals and families). Joan also has been a mentor for the Preschool for All programs. Joan has a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Special Education.

Roseann Slaght has 32 years of experience working with children and adults with disabilities. She has worked as a Family Resource Specialist with STARnet for 16 years, and is a licensed massage therapist.

This training will provide 10.0 hours for the following:

  • CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) #2 & #8
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals

Full attendance is required to receive a certificate of participation.
