April 22, 2010
Reg. 8:30 AM, Workshop 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Four Rivers Special Education, Play Room
936 West Michigan Avenue, Jacksonville, Illinois
Description/Bio: Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) typically don't benefit from traditional articulation or phonological therapy
techniques. This presentation will highlight methods for helping children with CAS develop greater volitional control over their speech, improve
vowel accuracy, expand syllable shape and phoneme repertoire, and establish increased speech intelligibility. Video clips demonstrating a wide
range of multisensory cueing techniques will be reviewed. A wide variety of materials and activities to support repetitive practice and address
speech prosody difficulties will be described. Participants will have opportunities to view case studies in order to develop a treatment plan or
IEP and to determine appropriate target utterances for treatment.
Margaret Fish is a speech-language pathologist with over 25 years of experience working with children in school and clinical settings. She
currently works in private practice in Highland Park, Illinois, primarily with children with severe speech sound disorders (including apraxia),
receptive and expressive language disorders, autism and language-learning disabilities. Ms. Fish lectures nationally on the topic of childhood
apraxia of speech and is in the process of completing a book, Here's How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech. She enjoys working closely
with families and school personnel in order to increase opportunities for generalization of speech and language skills.
